Fear Friday ~ Like Mom Always Says or Hey, That Is Not A French Fry!

Welcome to the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog. It's Friday and time for the final Road Trip themed Fear Friday of May. This week's selection is perhaps the best example of fear on the road. A creepy, and yes a bit cheesy and over the top, movie from the '80s that reminds us of the dangers of driving the open road. Like mom always said "Don't pick up hitchhikers." And as we know, mother is always right. Enjoy!

Every Friday at the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog is Fear Friday. Fear Fridays are a celebration of all films spooky. Horror is a very broad genre and the Lounge loves it all. Each Friday you will find a review of a different film. These can range from Classic Horror (black and white and cheesy),  Thrillers (suspense, jumps and a good mystery), outright Horror (chop chop, slash slash, die die) and anything else in between.

So pop some popcorn, kill the lights and enjoy tonight's selection. And please, share your comments on the film. Bad or good let me now what you thought of it. And now, my little ghouls and dolls, the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog is proud to present this week's film.

May - Road Trips

Fear Friday - The Hitcher

Tagline - The terror starts the moment he stops.
             Never Pick Up A Stranger.
He came from hell. Don't ask him where he wants to go.
Out on the desert highway, the rule of thumb has a different
             meaning.

Directed by Robert Harmon (They) and released in February 21, 1986 by TriStar Pictures (rated R). A young man, Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell), is delivering a car from Chicago to San Diego. Unable to keep his eyes open, he decides to pick up a hitch hiker, John Ryder (Rutger Hauer), standing on the side of the road so he can have someone to talk to. As the passenger door opens Jim utters the infamous line "My mother always told me not to do this". We the viewer know that mom was right but Jim has to learn the hard way.

I used to love Tommy Howell. Then I grew up and realized a cute boy does not a good actor make! That aside, this movie is still creepy and fun.

OK... this movie has lots of flaws. Mr. Howell really is not the greatest actor and it does show in this movie. Also, it's quite amazing how the hitcher can always be hiding right where Jim is about to show up. Maybe his character is psychic and they forgot to tell us. It's probably laying on the editing room floor.

The silliness aside, there really are some great scary and creepy elements here. It plays on all of those terrible "what could happen" of traveling, especially on your own. Driving in out of the way places, stopping at gas station and rest areas and crossing paths with lots of strangers. Usually harmless things but we all know the horrible things that do happen to people sometimes and that's what feeds the fear here.

What takes that fear and kicks it into high gear is Mr. Hauer himself. This is the first movie I really noticed Rutger Hauer in and it took a good decade to be able to separate him from this character. He is truly scary as the villain here and it shows just how talented of an actor he can be. The scene with Nash at the truck stop is just classic horror film making. Maybe you don't get to see as much as nowadays but it's horrible all the same.

There was a remake in 2007 with a switch of roles having our main character Jim now a woman and her boyfriend replacing Nash. While I am not usually a fan of the gender change I do like having a woman be the strong survivor in this one. Sean Bean does a very good job as the Hitcher but as most remakes go, the blood and gore factor is definitely doubled!!!

The Hitcher (1986) looks to be unavailable on most streaming services as of this review but should be available on most DVD rental services.
The Hitcher (2007) is available on most DVD and DVD streaming services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1.The writer of the screenplay, Eric Red, has said the story was inspired by the Doors song "Riders on the Storm".
2. In Rutger Hauer's book "All Those Moments," Hauer discusses how producer Ed Feldman settled on Sam Elliott for the role of John Ryder. Hauer states that "Apparently, Elliott was so scary when he came in to audition that Edward S. Feldman was afraid to go out to his car afterward." Sam Elliott had a scheduling conflict and had to back out the role.
3. Rutger Hauer knocked out one of his teeth with the shotgun he was holding during the windshield scene.
4. C. Thomas Howell admitted that he was actually afraid of Rutger Hauer on and off the set because of the actor's general intensity.
5. Screenwriter Eric Red can be seen in a cameo role toward the end of the film, playing a sheriff's deputy escorting John Ryder to the prison bus for transfer.
6. Rutger Hauer did a lot of the stunt driving throughout the movie which amazed the film crew and even the real stunt drivers.
7. The coach stops at "Roy's Motel and Diner" which is a famous landmark on the old Route 66, now interstate 40. It can be found at Amboy, California in the Mojave desert. It is featured in many films and documentaries.
8. On the jail wall you can read "Mort aux matons!" (probably written by a previous prisoner), translated to "Death to the jail guards!" in French.
9. In early drafts of the script, John Ryder had been described as skeletal in nature and so actors like David Bowie, Sting, Sam Shepard, Harry Dean Stanton, and Terence Stamp were mentioned.
10. For the role of Jim Halsey, the producers mentioned Matthew Modine, Tom Cruise and Emilio Estevez.
11. The original script ran the film equivalent of three hours.
12. Fox was to have distributed the film before TriStar Pictures took over.
13. Moments that ended up not being filmed include: Ryder slaughtering an entire family, an eyeball appearing in a hamburger (this was replaced in a finger in a plate of French fries), a graphic sex scene between 'Gal' Galveston (the girl before Nash) and Jim, and a character being decapitated. The film underwent several rewrites which removed the gorier moments.
14. To avoid an X rating the ending was changed to give Jim justification to doing what he does.
15. While being arrested outside the diner, C. Thomas Howell accidentally kicks one of the deputies in the back of the head while being slammed on the hood of the police car.
16. When Jim enters the abandoned garage, birds fly in front of the camera for dramatic effect. Though the hole in the floor seems to be intentional, the person visible pushing the birds out from said hole was probably not.

Fear Friday ~ Don't Pick Up Hitchhikers or Why You Should Never Ever Eat BBQ From A Gas Station!

Welcome to the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog. It's Friday and time for another round of Fear Friday. We have been celebrating all of May with a Road Trip theme. While our first three selection where lessor know modern films the rest of the month we will revisit some classics. This week's selection is a gritty, creepy and disturbing film from the early 70's that taught us so many lessons. Do not pick up hitchhikers. Do not run out of gas. Do not enter a stranger's house. And, to be on the safe side, just stay out of Texas!!! Grab some BBQ and enjoy!

Fear Friday - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Tagline - Who will survive and what will be left of them?
              Can you survive ...it happened

Directed by Tobe Hooper (Salem's Lot, Venom and Invaders from Mars) and released on October 1, 1974 by Bryanston Distributing. A group of teens are traveling the back roads of Texas wanting to visit the old home two of them grew up in. Running low on gas they try the local gas station but they are out. When they reach the house they decide to visit the neighbors to see if they have any gas they can borrow. Bad idea!

The movie opens with a narrator telling of happenings in a small Texas town in the summer of 1973. Graves at the local cemetery have been opened, bodies removed and missing and one disturbing display left. Many people are making their way to the graveyard to check on their family members. It is made to play as if this is an actual incident and the film is an account of the horrific events that followed.

A group of teens are driving to visit the cemetery to check on two of the teens grandfather's grave. They also plan to stop by and check out the old family home. On the way to the house they pick up a hitchhiker. Then very quickly get rid of the hitchhiker!!! They then stop for gas at the local gas station. The station is out of gas. Tanks won't be filled 'til later. Why don't they come on in for some BBQ?!! They decide to go to the house since it is not far away. When they arrive at the house they notice the neighbors have a generator running which means they should have some gasoline. Let's go see if they will share. *I have a very bad feeling about this idea*

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre still holds up as one of the truly great horror films. One of the main reasons is that it is simple yet very effective. The look of the film is gritty and very low key. There is no glitz and glamor of today's slick looking horror films. While there is blood and violence it is actually pretty tame compared to today's R rated films. It is all there, it is all implied but you do not really see anyone being gutted or chopped to pieces. It is not needed. What you do see if plenty creepy.

While the chasing and killing is tense and creepy the part of the movie that really stands out, and makes this a chilling experience that will not soon leave you, is the mentality of "the family". These people are just so wrong. The big dinner scene at the end is disturbing, horrifying and wrong. Wrong, wrong and wrong! It is the effectiveness of these characters that make the movie more than the average slasher film. It may make you wonder why one would watch this but it does what most horror films fall short of... leaving you with a lasting impression that will creep you out every time it crosses your mind. Hmmm... maybe that is not such a great thing. Oh well, to late for this Vixen.

It was possibly the first real slasher film. It certainly started a long string of movies in the 1970's which featured a very distinctive style of brutality and realism. This movie is in no way a true story but it did borrow from real life serial killer Ed Gein. Mr. Gein, like Leather Face, did make furniture out of human skin and sold what the locals considered the best sausage around. Knowing things like this only add to the creepiness of the film.

This movie spawned 3 sequels and 3 remakes/re-imaginings. While none of them are great number 2 has Denis Hopper, number 3 has Viggo Mortensen and number 4 has Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger. The first remake is fun enough and follows the original fairly well.

Fun facts -
The narrators voice at the beginning is actor John Larroquette who is well known for his role in the TV show Night Court.

The house that was used in the movie is a functioning restaurant. As of this review it is open as the Grand Central Cafe and is part of The Antlers historic hotel in Kingsland, Texas. Eating dinner in the actual room the dinner scene took place? Yep, no sound stage here. It was all filmed right in the house. It is so wrong and yet I have to go!!! This is now on my bucket list. Find the cafe here and the hotel here.

I have also included a short video below that is a fun look at the actual shooting locations.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is available on most DVD and DVD Streaming services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

An interesting video showing the filming locations.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. The movie wasn't released in Australia until the early 1980s.
2. When it was first released, the film was so horrifying that people actually walked out on sneak previews for it.
3. The film was rejected by the British film censors in 1975, but it did get a limited cinema release in the London area thanks to the GLC (Greater London Council). It was banned again in 1977, when the censors' attempts to cut it were unsuccessful, (for the purposes of a wider release), then it was banned again in 1984, due to the growing controversy involving 'video nasties'. In 1999, after the censors finally changed their policy, they took the plunge, and passed it uncut, for the cinema and video, after 25 years, since they first banned it.
4. The film was originally entitled "Headcheese", but was filmed as "Leatherface", then changed again at the last minute to "Texas Chain Saw Massacre".
5. Due to the low budget, Gunnar Hansen had only one shirt to wear as Leatherface. The shirt had been dyed, so it could not be washed; Hansen had to wear it for four straight weeks of filming in the Texas summer. By the end of the shoot no one wanted to eat lunch with Hansen because his clothing smelled so bad.
6. Tobe Hooper intended to make the movie for a "PG" rating, by keeping violence moderate and language mild, but despite cutting and repeated submissions, the Ratings Board insisted on the "R" rating for the effectiveness of what is onscreen and what is implied offscreen. Hooper had a similar ratings problem with the sequel.
7. According to John Larroquette, his payment for doing the opening narration was a marijuana joint.
8. Some urban legends say that the the "real" Texas Chainsaw Massacre took place near Poth, (a small town about 50 miles south of San Antonio). This is false. The film is fictional and based loosely on the life of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein (as is the classic Psycho (1960).

James Dean Grave Site ~ Fairmount, Indiana ~ 1994
In 1994 I took two big road trips and covered a lot of states. Being a huge James Dean fan I had to make a stop in Fairmount, Indiana where he grew up and in 1955 was laid to rest. You will also find the house he lived in and the James Dean Gallery which has a large amount of memorabilia.

~SUMMER MOVIES~

Laughing Vixen Lounge loves movies so here are some fun Summer themed movies to chase away those Summertime Blues.

Summer Rental - Classic 80's comedy with one of the greats, John Candy. Simple silly fun about taking the family on Summer vacation to the beach. Includes a big boat race that, for some reason, was a very popular theme of '80's Summer movies.

The Great Outdoors - John Candy and Dan Aykroyd take the family, once again, on vacation. This time to the woods. I think this one is the better of our two John Candy films. Most likely because it was written by the great John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club and Vacation).

Stealing Home - A lessor known film from 1988. Mark Harmon (NCIS) and Jodie Foster (Silence of the Lambs) take us on a very nostalgic trip to the 1960's. A summer filled with being young, coming of age and heartbreak. If you haven't seen this one I highly recommend it!!!

American Graffiti - This one is eye candy for anyone who is a fan of retro culture. Funny, nostalgic, an amazing soundtrack and loaded with familiar faces in their very early years.

One Crazy Summer - John Cusack (Say Anything) and Demi Moore (Ghost) do their thing in this 80's teen comedy. And yes, there is a big boat race!!! Silly fun.

Meatballs - Topping it all off is another offering from the 1980's Summer Camp movies. An adult comedy with boy humor, a little sex, a little nudity, kids getting in trouble, councilors getting in even more and placing itself firmly as one of the best camp movies. Racy for its day but probably tame by today's standards.

Universal Studios ~ Orlando, Florida ~ June 1994.
That's my mom Rosemary and myself Kris in front of the Psycho set used for Psycho IV. The first movie to be filmed at Universal Studios in Florida. The movie was a prequel so if you walked around to the back side of the house it was still bright yellow from the flashback scenes. But don't go to Universal looking for this. It was taken down in '98 to make way for the Curious George Water Park and a Barney attraction. Hmmm?!
Universal Studios ~ Universal City, California ~ Summer 1990.
That's me with Jaws!

~SUMMER MOVIES~

Laughing Vixen Lounge loves movies so here are some fun Summer themed movies to chase away those Summertime Blues.

Dirty Dancing - A fun retro romp with wonderful music and great dancing set against a 1963's NY Catskills Mountain summer resort.

Summer School - A personal favorite. Mark Harmon (NCIS) in his glory days playing a teacher who gets stuck teaching Summer school to a group of misfits. Classic 80's comedy.

Jaws - Making people afraid of the water since 1975. It will make you think twice before swimming in the ocean this Summer break! Always a fun watch.

Little Darlings - No summer movie list would be complete without a few 80's Summer Camp movies. The subject matter may seems tame by today's standard but was daring for its day. Funny camp humor with some touching coming of age moments. Bonus points for a very young Matt Dillon.

The Eiffel Tower ~ Paris, France ~ 1985
That's me Kris at the Eiffel Tower. In 1985, the summer before 9th grade, I was lucky enough to get to go on a class trip to Europe. 9 countries in 28 days. It was fast paced, we traveled by bus, the hotels were far from fancy and some spots might not have been too pleasant but I am so glad I had the chance to do it! Hopefully I will get to go back again and see it as an adult.
